Founded in 2005 by its principal conductor, Dr. Margaret Thornhill, the Los Angeles Clarinet Choir is one of North America’s premiere clarinet ensembles. Most members have degrees in clarinet performance or the equivalent in college-level study. Committed to performing and premiering new orginal music and arrangements for this unique medium, the LACC is the dedicatee of original works by Kovler, Cansino, Gurol, Avshalomov, Brisk, Curtis, and Hablewitz, and has given west coast premieres of works by Linkola, Curtis, Ellerby, Whitlock, and Johnston, as well as works by many contemporary Japanese composers. We’ve been fortunate to have talented member arrangers in the group, including Christin Hablewitz, David Sucik, and Carlos Herrera.
In 2007, the LACC was the only clarinet choir selected by audition to perform at the International Clarinet Association ClarinetFest in Vancouver, British Columbia, performing Edward Cansino’s “The Great Clarinet Circus” and they were featured performers at ClarinetFest 2010 in Austin, 2011 at California State University Northridge, Los Angeles, 2017 in Orlando, Florida, and 2019 in Knoxville, Tennessee, presenting local premieres of works by Jukka Linkola, Matti Kovler, Daniel Rodier and Mark Mellits.
The Choir has performed for standing room only audiences at the South Pasadena Eclectic Music Festival from 2009-13, at the Vandoren Clarinet Ensemble Festival at UCLA in 2010, and for schools, colleges, museums, concert series, retirement centers, churches, and libraries throughout Southern California, including Biola University, Concordia University Irvine, the Baldwin Hills School District, Westminster Gardens in Duarte, Sollheim Retirement in Eagle Rock, Cal Poly Pomona, and many others. In 2019, the LACC held its first “Clarinet Day” for high school and community players on the campus of Concordia University Irvine.
In 2025, the LACC will mark its twentieth anniversary with special concerts featuring newly commissioned works.
